MediaTek has introduced the Dimensity 9400, its latest smartphone chipset, designed specifically for optimising Edge-AI applications. Managing Editor Paige West attended a press talk to learn more.

As the fourth iteration in MediaTek's mobile SoC range, the Dimensity 9400 brings a significant leap in performance, featuring a second-generation All Big Core architecture based on Arm’s v9.2 CPU. This, along with an advanced GPU and NPU, delivers high performance while maintaining energy efficiency.

The chipset’s design includes one Arm Cortex-X925 core running at over 3.62GHz, paired with 3x Cortex-X4 and 4x Cortex-A720 cores, offering a 35% increase in single-core and a 28% boost in multi-core performance over the previous generation Dimensity 9300. Built using TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process, the Dimensity 9400 is also 40% more power-efficient, providing extended battery life for users.

“The MediaTek Dimensity 9400 will continue furthering our mission to be the enablers of AI, supporting powerful applications that anticipate users’ needs and adapt to their preferences, while also fuelling generative AI technology with on-device LoRA training and video generation,” said Joe Chen, President at MediaTek. “As the fourth-generation flagship chipset, the Dimensity 9400 continues to build on our momentum of steady growth in market share, and MediaTek’s legacy of delivering flagship performance in the most efficient design for the best user experiences.”

Equipped with MediaTek’s 8th Gen NPU, the Dimensity 9400 introduces several industry firsts in generative AI, including on-device LoRA training and high-quality video generation. It also supports Agentic AI, with an 80% faster large language model (LLM) prompt response and a 35% improvement in power efficiency compared to its predecessor.

The new Dimensity Agentic AI Engine (DAE) aims to transform traditional AI apps into advanced agentic AI solutions. MediaTek is collaborating with developers to create a unified interface linking AI agents, third-party APKs, and models, enabling seamless performance across both edge AI and Cloud-based services. This approach is expected to reduce development time and drive the growth of agentic AI applications.

For gaming enthusiasts, the 12-core Arm Immortalis-G925 GPU offers a 40% boost in raytracing performance and supports PC-level features like opacity micromaps (OMM) for more lifelike effects. The GPU delivers a 41% peak performance improvement, alongside a 44% increase in power efficiency over the Dimensity 9300, enabling extended gameplay. HyperEngine technology, co-developed with Arm, enhances resolution and picture quality.

The Dimensity 9400 also includes MediaTek’s Imagiq 1090, which allows for HDR video recording across the zoom range, helping users capture distant subjects with ease. Its Smooth Zoom feature and energy-efficient design further enhance video and photo capture, reducing power consumption by up to 14% during 4K60 video recording compared to the Dimensity 9300.

Additional features of the Dimensity 9400 include:

  • A refreshed 3GPP Release-17 5G modem with 4CC-CA and up to 7Gbps sub-6GHz performance
  • New 4nm Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chip with 7.3Gbps data rates performance and up to 50% lower power consumption compared to the previous generation.
  • Support for Wi-Fi 7 tri-band MLO
  • MediaTek Xtra RangeTM 3.0, which delivers up to 30m greater Wi-Fi coverage
  • 5G/4G Dual SIM Dual Active, Dual Data capabilities to give users more flexibility
  • Support for tri-fold smartphones giving smartphone makers the flexibility to design innovative new form factors

The first smartphones powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 will be available in the market starting in Q4 of 2024.
