Honda begins collaborative AI project with India

The partnership with the IITs, which are recognised for their expertise in technology and engineering, will focus on advancing CI’s core technologies. This research aims to explore future applications such as reducing traffic collisions and developing automated driving technologies.

Honda's CI initiative is part of its broader vision of creating a society where mobility is accessible to everyone, enabling seamless and safe transportation for both people and goods. A key component of this vision is making mobility solutions that are collision-free and stress-free. Honda has already begun demonstrating its CI-powered micro-mobility vehicle and robot in Joso City, Japan, as part of its proof-of-concept trials.

To push the boundaries of CI technology, Honda and the IITs have set several joint research themes. These include improving the recognition of environmental surroundings and encouraging cooperative behaviour in AI. By employing cutting-edge AI technologies, both institutions will work together on research and development projects that extend beyond the confines of traditional laboratory settings. The joint projects will involve close collaboration between Honda associates, IIT professors, and students, ensuring a dynamic exchange of knowledge between academia and industry.

One of the key goals of this collaboration is the verification of driver assistance and automated driving technologies in the complex traffic environments of Delhi and Mumbai. India’s diverse road systems and unpredictable traffic conditions pose unique challenges for AI. Through real-world testing in these challenging environments, Honda and the IITs hope to refine CI technology and eventually apply it to driver assistance and autonomous driving solutions globally, including in India.

Since 2019, Honda has actively recruited IIT graduates, many of whom now play important roles in the company’s research and development efforts, particularly in mobility intelligence and CI. By working closely with IIT professors and students, Honda aims to accelerate the development of AI technologies while also nurturing future researchers by providing hands-on, practical research opportunities.

Through this joint effort, Honda seeks to not only advance its CI technologies but also contribute to the development of a new generation of AI researchers who will shape the future of mobility and automation.
