EU Parliament expands archive access with Anthropic’s Claude
The European Parliament has enhanced access to its archives by launching ‘Ask the EP Archives’, known as Archibot, a sophisticated AI tool powered by Anthropic’s Claude through Amazon Bedrock.
This AI assistant provides streamlined access to more than 2.1 million official documents, opening new possibilities for researchers, policymakers, educators, and the public to engage with EU history.
Since 1952, the Archives Unit of the European Parliament has been responsible for preserving, managing, and processing all documents produced or received by the Parliament. Traditionally, the primary challenges for archivists have included making these vast archives searchable and ensuring easy access for all users. However, generative AI has revolutionised this landscape, transforming how archivists and researchers can navigate the extensive documentation.
Accessible on the European Parliament's archive website, Archibot enables users worldwide to explore EU Parliament documents in multiple languages. These include resolutions, policy positions, and inter-institutional negotiations, all searchable and ready to aid researchers and staff in data analysis and report generation.
This project exemplifies how generative AI can support governmental transparency, putting valuable information about European democracy at the public's fingertips.
Key features of Archibot:
- Advanced search and summarisation: Users can efficiently navigate and summarise vast records.
- Report building: Enables users to extract and organise information for tailored reports.
- Multilingual capabilities: Extends support beyond French to cover all EU member languages.
- Global accessibility: Available worldwide through the European Parliament’s website.
- Constitutional AI: Ensures AI technology is used securely and responsibly.
Benefits realised:
- Reduces document search and analysis time by 80%, significantly improving efficiency.
- Provides policymakers and researchers with quick access to historical context and precedents.
- Serves as an educational resource, utilised by hundreds of educators and students to explore European parliamentary history.
Since introducing Claude to Europe, Anthropic has expanded its offerings to include Claude 3.5, one of the leading large language models (LLMs), alongside the Claude Team plan, Claude Enterprise, and Claude Artifacts. These tools are accessible across iOS and Android, promoting further engagement with safe and responsible AI among European businesses and consumers.
