Camera-based assistance system handles inattentive driving
Throughout Europe 25,700 people were killed on the roads last year – an average of 70 traffic fatalities a day. Most of these accidents happened because the motorists weren’t paying attention. A system has been designed to assist the driver and significantly reduce the number of accidents. At the 2015 International Motor Show (IAA), Kostal presents a camera-based ADAS with know-how from Infineon.
Making robots more autonomous
Scientists at the University of Glasgow have joined forces with British and American colleagues in a project that may ultimately help robots become more autonomous through recognising and understanding everyday scenes.
Technology to accelerate development of autonomous driving
NXP Semiconductors has announced its new product portfolio for automotive Ethernet. The portfolio builds on BroadR-Reach, an automotive standard defined by the OPEN Alliance industry group, with the aim to make consumer-level Ethernet capable of meeting the automotive industry’s stringent requirements. NXP is a founding member of OPEN Alliance and the first to offer a truly automotive portfolio consisting of two product families, Ethernet t...
Man or machine?
Since manufacturers introduced the first robot arms onto assembly lines in the early 1960s, the fear that they will take human jobs has slowly spread. And it's true; many jobs have already been delegated to robots, including assembly, farming, surgery and even vacuuming. Here European Automation's Darren Halford continues the discussion.
Advanced image co-processors suit automotive cameras
Designed to work in conjunction with the company’s high performance 2 and 1.2MP image sensor devices, ON Semiconductor has unveiled a series of image co-processors. The AP020x series of co-processors enable a full range of complete solutions for automotive rear view and surround view cameras, including high dynamic range 1080p automotive camera systems.
Elon Musk saves mankind from evil AI
Amid rapid industry investment in developing smarter artificial intelligence, a new branch of research has begun which aims to ensure that society can reap the benefits of AI while avoiding potential pitfalls. The Boston-based Future of Life Institute (FLI) has announced the selection of 37 research teams around the world to which it plans to award about $7m from Elon Musk and the Open Philanthropy Project as part of a first-of-its-kind grant pro...

Green Hills Software has announced its industry-leading platform for ADAS, including the INTEGRITY RTOS and 64-bit MULTI development tools, for the Freescale S32V200 automotive vision processor featuring quad ARM Cortex-A53 cores with dedicated vision processors cores.
The sixth sense
A range of new road safety technology research projects that are being developed to reduce the number of accidents caused by drivers who are stressed, distracted and not concentrating on the road ahead has been revealed by Jaguar Land Rover. The Jaguar Land Rover 'Sixth Sense' research projects utilises advanced technology, from sports, medicine and aerospace, to monitor the driver's heart rate, respiration and levels of brain activity to id...
The race is on
As autonomous vehicles edge ever closer to mainstream reality, it’s now legislation and litigation that are expected to hold things up, not technology. But that only puts more pressure on manufacturers to get their solutions to market, as Philip Ling investigates.
Intelligent V2X system streamlines port traffic
The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and NXP Semiconductors have jointly unveiled the first intelligent traffic light that optimises the flow of truck traffic and guides drivers through the increasingly used port of Hamburg quickly and safely. The smartPORT Traffic Light is another project realised by the HPA to prevent traffic congestion and emissions and is part of the HPA’s overall effort to increase use of IT in these future-oriented measur...
