The Government’s commitment to invest £1bn to support the private sector roll-out of full-fibre broadband by 2020-21 and trials of 5G mobile communications has been welcomed by CW (Cambridge Wireless). These commitments were announced in yesterday’s Autumn Statement to Parliament by Chancellor Philip Hammond.

Appropriately, CW was founded over 15 years ago to provide a community and test bed for the adoption of 3G.

"Since its inception, CW has been championing the symbiosis of progressive digital communication infrastructure and innovative digital services," said Raj Gawera, CW Chairman and VP and Managing Director, Samsung Cambridge and Samsung Aalborg. “The growth and evolution of the all-important digital economy in the UK will be linked closely to our ability to scale communication infrastructure to world-class standards. It is also very positive to see the Government recognising the importance of supporting both infrastructure development and innovation through start-ups."

"It is very encouraging to see strong Government support for the nation's digital infrastructure,” said Prof William Webb, FREng, FIET, FIEEE, CW Deputy Chairman and CEO Weightless SIG. “At this early stage for 5G, targeted Government funding could have a very beneficial effect in reducing uncertainty and encouraging innovation. We look forward to working with Government on the details of how to optimally award this funding to ensure the best outcome across the industry and the nation."

Robert Driver, CEO at CW, also welcomed the Government’s announcement of £100m investment in testing infrastructure for driverless cars and an additional £400m to support tech start-ups. “The recent finals of the CW Discovering Start-ups competition demonstrated the exciting level of UK innovation and entrepreneurship and it is vital that the Government shows its commitment to nurture new talent and drive the development of pioneering technologies such as autonomous vehicles.”
