RFS takes active steps to address 5G infrastructure challenges
Radio Frequency Systems has announced its new Active Passive Antenna (APA) system. Designed to help operators overcome the technical and economic challenges associated with the evolution to 5G, and continued network modernisation in relation to LTE-Advanced, RFS’ APA system will be demoed for the first time at Mobile World Congress 2018. The new APA system uniquely interleaves a 5G active antenna with a passive base station antenna und...
Europe gets ready for 5G trials
As a plethora of 5G network trials are being announced across Europe, the Dynamic Spectrum Alliance (DSA) has released the preliminary agenda and speakers list for its Sixth Annual Global Summit (1st to 3rd of May, 2018). Held in Europe for the first time since its inception, the Summit will explore a range of topics from universal affordable connectivity to 6GHz for broadband services, and millimetre wave bands.
5G system prototype unveiled at 2018 Winter Games
A research institute of CEA Tech, Leti, has announced that the European and South Korean project, 5GCHAMPION, will demonstrate the world’s first 5G platform from 20th to 22nd February, during the 2018 Winter Games. The 5GCHAMPION consortium, which includes 21 universities, research institutes and companies from Europe and South Korea, is supported by the European Commission and the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT.
5G test platform advances chip development
A 5G test platform to help support test development for Qualcomm Technologies on 5G chipsets has been unveiled by Anritsu. The mobile communications test specialist has been working with Qualcomm Technologies to support test development for devices such as baseband chips. Anritsu’s test platform for 5G, the next generation communication system beyond 4G LTE, is designed to support Qualcomm Technologies in its effort to commercialise next ge...
Converging networks pave the way to 5G deployment
By training young researchers and bridging different fields of research, the COMANDER project has successfully helped shape the future of 5G in favour of fibre-wireless networks. We may not realise it, but the exponential growth in the number of connected devices of all kinds – commonly known as the “Internet of Things” – is progressively driving current infrastructures into a corner.
Simultaneous digital beamforming supports 5G communications
With a massive-element active antenna base station system that supports a 28GHz band for 5G communications, NEC has announced the successful transmission of digital beamforming. This is the first time simultaneous beamforming transmission (four multi-user MIMO) from a single massive-element active antenna system (AAS) to four terminals has succeeded. In this test, NEC achieved a 3.1Gbps cell throughput by applying a frequency bandwidth of 30...
MIMO system enables 5G performance on LTE networks
Blue Danube Systems has introduced its second-generation 5G-ready Massive MIMO system, the BeamCraft 600 series. BeamCraft 600 supports simultaneous beamforming over multiple frequency bands and across multiple cellular standards, allowing operators to deliver increased capacity through a single compact system.
Siemens continues to invest in IC industry with planned acquisition
Siemens has entered into an agreement to acquire Oulu, Finland-based Sarokal Test Systems Oy, provider of innovative test solutions for fronthaul networks that are comprised of links between the centralised radio controllers and the radio heads (or masts) at the 'edge' of a cellular network. Sarokal products are used by chipset vendors, fronthaul equipment manufacturers, and telecom operators to develop, test and verify their 4G and 5G netwo...
The evolution of 5G and what is next?
We have all heard the term 5G thrown around a lot in the last decade, it has been hyped up especially in the past few years, but it is only now as we approach a clear definition of how 5G will actually be installed that we can see it is a very different beast from previous generations of cellular technology.
