Nexeon marked a significant advancement with the commencement of construction on its inaugural commercial production plant.

This development is a crucial step towards fulfilling Nexeon's pledge to provide high-performance, economically viable silicon anode materials at commercial scales by 2025.

Advancements in silicon anode technology

Nexeon's innovation in silicon anode materials promises to substantially boost the energy density of lithium-ion batteries. This enhancement is critical for increasing the driving range and charging efficiency of electric vehicles. The company's second-generation technology facilitates the integration of a higher silicon content into the batteries, enabling manufacturers to upgrade their products seamlessly without incurring extra costs.

"Breaking ground on our first commercial production facility is the culmination of many years of dedication and technical accomplishments by the Nexeon team. It marks a key moment in our growth and reflects the commercial interest customers have shown in our technology," said Scott Brown, CEO of Nexeon. "By beginning construction on our first commercial production site, we are on track to deliver the game-changing benefits of silicon anode materials to the global battery market."

A partnership geared towards growth

Nexeon's strategic alliance with OCI, a global producer of silane, secures a stable and cost-efficient source of essential material. The arrangement includes a direct pipeline for silane, optimising the production process, reducing logistics expenses, and supporting Nexeon’s goals for sustainability. OCI’s capacity for scaling up production guarantees a steady supply of materials to meet the escalating demand in the market.

"We are thrilled to partner with Nexeon in this endeavour," said Yoo-Shin Kim, President (CEO) of OCI. "This collaboration leverages the strengths of both companies, combining OCI's expertise in advanced materials with Nexeon's leading silicon anode technology. Together, we will deliver high-quality, cost-competitive solutions that accelerate the future of battery technology.".  OCI will produce silane by utilising by-products from an existing manufacturing process used for semiconductor materials, further compounding cost-competitiveness.

The inauguration of the construction site is a pivotal move towards the commercial availability of silicon anode materials, setting Nexeon on a path to transforming the lithium-ion battery industry and heralding a new chapter in energy efficiency.

The ceremony attracted key figures, including Nexeon's CEO Scott Brown, Vice-Governor of Jeonbuk Jonghun Kim, Gunsan's Mayor Imjune Kang, National Assembly Member Youngdae Shin, members of the Jeonbuk State Council Taechang Kang and Dongku Kim, OCI's CEO Yooshin Kim, and SC Engineering's EVP Dae-sik Wang, highlighting the project's significance in establishing Gunsan City as a centre for technological innovation.

Furthermore, executives from SKC, SJL Partners, BNW, and Shinhan Securities, who are investors in Nexeon, were present at the event, demonstrating their backing for this initiative.
