Toshiba’s new photocouplers TLP7820 and TLP7920 are for current sensing and voltage sensing in power converters.

Toshiba’s TLP7820 and TLP7920 photocouplers are designed for current sensing and voltage sensing in power converters. They achieve high accuracy through the inclusion of a delta sigma ADC. Both versions are analogue output type devices and available at distributor Rutronik as of now; digital output variants will follow.

Factory automation equipment, such as servo amplifiers and inverters, now operates with such a high degree of precision, that it requires extremely accurate feedback to the microcontroller on status of the phase current of the motor or the variation of the bus voltage.

Therefore, the photocouplers are equipped with a delta sigma ADC at the input side enabling the device to achieve a high level of linearity (0.02% at NL 200, typical). They have an operating temperature range from -40 up to +105°C. Isolation is through an optical barrier with guaranteed isolation voltage of 5000VRMS (min.).

Both provide a guaranteed common mode transient immunity of 20kV/µs that enables stable operation in electrically noisy environments, making it particularly suitable for motor control applications. Further applications include servo amplifiers, inverters, power sources and photovoltaic inverters. 

The photocouplers are available in two package types: TLP7920 is supplied in an industry-standard DIP8 package; TLP7820 comes in a new and more compact SO8L package, taking up to 30% less board space and featuring a 40% lower profile.
