Microchip Introduces Next-Generation Energy Measurement Solution
Microchip announces the MCP3909 energy-measurement IC and reference design. The new IC combines low power consumption with an SPI interface and active power pulse output. As a part of the MCP3909 3-Phase Energy Meter Reference Design, the new IC enables designers to rapidly develop new meter designs.
The The MCP3909 3-Phase Energy Meter Reference Design (Part # MCP3909RD-3PH1) includes three MCP3909 ICs, and separate PIC18F2520 and PIC18F4550 microcontrollers, in a modular design. The PIC18F2520 performs all power calculations in the reference design, while the PIC18F4550 provides a USB interface to desktop software. The software package that comes with the reference design provides the ability to read active and apparent power, as well as RMS current and RMS voltage enables, and also enables meter calibration. The reference design is expected to be available for purchase from www.microchipdirect.com in March.
Additional information on metering applications is available from Microchip's online Utility Meter Design Centre (www.microchip.com/meter). This comprehensive site provides engineers with the technical tools and resources needed to create accurate, reliable and low-cost utility metering applications, including energy, water, gas and heat meters.
Offered in a 24-pin SSOP package, samples of the MCP3909 can be ordered today from sample.microchip.com while volume orders can be placed at www.microchipdirect.com.
