magniX launches new battery product
magniX recently unveiled its latest innovation: the Samson battery line. Tailored specifically for the aviation sector and other high-demand applications, the Samson batteries promise high performance, safety, and dependability.
These batteries are poised for certification under strict aviation standards, having quality energy density, a good cycle life, and exclusive safety features protected by patents.
When paired with magniX's electric engines, the Samson batteries form a seamless and efficient electric powertrain for the aerospace industry. The inaugural product, the magniX Samson300, is engineered to optimise energy density, thereby enhancing flight range and payload capacity.
The defining characteristics of the magniX Samson batteries are:
- An energy density of 300 Watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg)
- A battery cycle life exceeding 1,000 full-depth discharge cycles, significantly lowering operational costs
- Proprietary safety technologies that prevent thermal runaway at the cellular level and allow for long-term storage at zero charge
- Rapid aircraft turnaround capabilities due to active ground cooling during charging, complemented by a passive cooling option during flight to reduce weight and system complexity
- An integrated power electronics and distribution system that enhances power supply management to the propulsion system
- A modular design that not only powers larger aircraft but also facilitates straightforward battery replacement
- A comprehensive design that adheres to aviation certification standards
The aerospace battery solution and beyond
Developed from magniX's expertise in electric aviation, the Samson batteries are a robust, practical choice for both battery electric and hybrid electric aircraft. They are designed for effortless integration and are also perfectly suited for powering helicopters, eVTOLs, and even marine vessels, leveraging their advanced engineering and software capabilities.
“magniX’s Samson batteries represent a breakthrough for magniX and electric aviation,” said Ben Loxton, VP of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and the NASA Electric Powertrain Flight Demonstration (EPFD) Program at magniX. “With unrivalled energy density, cycle life, and safety features, magniX’s Samson batteries will help to unlock the tremendous potential of electric flight – enabling many eVTOLs and electric programs on the edge of viability to become viable.”
“We are thrilled to introduce this revolutionary battery technology to the world of electric aviation and beyond,” said Reed Macdonald, CEO of magniX. “With the development of our Samson batteries, magniX can now offer customers a fully integrated electric powertrain, and it’s just the beginning. The roadmap to an energy density of 400Wh/kg or more is looking very promising. The future of flight is here, and it is being powered by magniX.”
