Paige West speaks with Shawn Dorsey, Senior Technical Artist at The QT Company about the role that virtual reality plays in the automotive sector as well as the user experience (UX) experimentation that is currently going on.

As Senior Technical Artist, Dorsey is responsible for The QT Company’s design studio product where he gets to help users create advanced interfaces using modern 2D and 3D techniques.

“I have a degree in design engineering, and I worked for a jet engine company. After two years … I went back to school … and received another degree in 3D visual effects and animation.

“It was at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida that launched my career into this world of amazing CGI technology.”

There’s a technological shift happening in the automotive industry – cars are becoming more and more like our phones. So, like a mobile phone, having a car will mean that users pay for its usage on an ongoing basis, over a certain period of time. This places a lot of importance on the user experience as that is what will drive brand loyalty.

Designers will play a big part in maintaining that user experience. “That designer role becomes increasingly more complex because that person will always need to be two steps ahead of emerging technology, and especially how to integrate it properly.”

Virtual reality is being used in the automotive space for a variety of applications. One of them is an application in autonomous vehicles to help reduce motion sickness. Ford has also used QT to take the testing of a new feature inside its cars into the virtual space.

Dorsey goes on to talk about how important testing is before deployment, how is VR being used to build safer vehicles and how he sees the automotive industry evolving in the future.
