TI's Israeli engineering team introduce innovative DOCSIS 3.0 cable technology
To meet the widespread global demand for DOCSIS 3.0® (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) products and services, Texas Instruments Incorporated’s Israeli engineering team is creating innovative cable modem, set-top-box and video gateway chipsets that help operators and manufacturers deliver blazing data transfer speeds and compelling multimedia services. TI’s world-class lab, located in Herzelia, Israel, allows TI to deliver next generation broadband products to market quickly by providing a robust environment and central location to develop and test new products.
“TI recognizes Israel as a leading force in developing emerging technologies and represents prime opportunities for development partnerships as the semiconductor sector continues to drive growth in many markets including data, voice, IP and networking communications. TI’s dedication to recruiting local Israeli engineering talent and culture of continual professional development has allowed us to establish a strong core of team members in our Israel lab and helped us achieve significant market success and breakthroughs in digital signal processing technology,” said Ran Senderovitz, TI’s recently appointed and Israel-based Digital Connected Home business manager. “With the goal of helping our customers and cable operators rapidly deploy DOCSIS 3.0, a technology that will impact the global community of broadband users, TI’s Israeli-based cable engineering team worked around the clock to be the first to develop a flexible and scalable solution that enables the delivery of next generation voice, video and data services to the home.”Overview of TI’s Puma 5 DOCSIS 3.0 Technology
Announced earlier this year, TI’s Puma 5 family of cable modem , STB and video gateway chipsets provide a flexible and scalable platform on which equipment manufacturers can build systems for compelling next-generation video, voice and data service offerings. TI’s Puma 5 delivers the much anticipated higher data rates supported by DOCSIS 3.0. With DOCSIS 3.0 line speeds starting at 160 megabits per second (Mbps) and accelerating upward to 320 Mbps and higher, the Puma 5 family has the flexibility and agility to support a wide-range of current and next-generation applications. Starting with basic data-centric cable modem applications like high-speed Internet access, Puma 5 chipsets have the resources for higher-end applications such as voice-oriented EMTA services and market-leading digital Internet Protocol-based video (IPTV). The simple re-configurability of the platform allows operators to deploy the DOCSIS 3.0 capabilities of the Puma 5 today and be assured that they will be able to cost-effectively upgrade their service offerings to meet the market demand for compelling multimedia services like IPTV.
The Puma 5 family of products features a number of capabilities for an easy and cost-effective migration to next-generation applications like IP-based television (IPTV) and others. These resources will support a rapid roll-out of IPTV service as marketplace demand grows. TI's video gateway solution is compatible with both legacy QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) cable video and IP-based data streams, and can function either as a transport or video gateway into the residence. Supporting both STB and gateway solutions, the TI’s video gateway chipset helps operators change the way end-consumers receive video to the home and distribute video inside the digital home by allowing operators to deliver video over IP concurrently with their current video over MPEG distribution system. To provide further value, Puma 5 based video gateways have the ability to translate any video signal into an IP message allowing operators to deliver video through home networking technology to low-cost STBs.
