Utilizing the TMS320DM8168 DaVinci digital media processor from Texas Instruments, Hikvision, a leading supplier of video surveillance products and solutions, recently introduced a new generation of DVR products with significant enhancements in compression, display and control functionalities.

The DM8168 DaVinci digital media processor consolidates all of the capture, compression, display and control functionalities of an HD multi-channel system onto a single chip to continue to meet the increasing demand for highly integrated, high definition (HD) video. Designed specifically for video security and video communications applications, this best-in-class DaVinci digital media processor offers extreme integration including a 1 GHz ARM® Cortex™-A8 , a 1 GHz TI C674x DSP core and several programmable HD video image co-processors. This integrated technology developed by TI and implemented on the single-chip DM8168 DaVinci digital media processor reduces board size by five times and power consumption by three times by replacing the functionality of more than 10 discrete components.

Combined with an increase in HD video pre- and post-processing, the DM8168 DaVinci digital media processor offers best-in-class multi-channel video density performance. It also delivers higher quality video at lower for increased video storage with the same high definition display capacity and lower network bandwidth needed for video streaming, which is ideal for video security applications. Compared to previous generations of digital video processors, the innovative DM8168 DaVinci digital media processor provides the capabilities of a 16-channel DVR in a single chip with advanced video analytics and enhanced 2D and 3D graphics.

TI’s on-time delivery of the DM8168 DaVinci digital media processor and dedicated support enabled Hikvision to exceed market requirement sand turn the DM8168 DVR-on-a-chip platform into a real DVR product in less than eight months, said Yangzhong Hu, CEO, Hikvision.

For many years, TI has been committed to meeting Hikvision’s high standards for quality as well as rapid development,” said Cyril Clocher, video surveillance business manager, digital signal processor (DSP) Systems Business Unit, TI. “Their partnership is important to TI to enable this level of development, and we're proud of Hikvision's accomplishment to implement the DM8168 DaVinci media processor in such record time.
