Low-voltage DC motor driver IC from Allegro
The A3908 from Allegro MicroSystems Europe is a low-voltage bidirectional DC motor driver IC in an ultra-compact package measuring only 2 mm square. Combining a high operating current with a wide operating voltage range, the new device is ideal for use in battery-operated applications including cameras, toys and games, portable printer/scanners and test instrumentation.
The A3908 has a typical input voltage range of 3.0 V to 5.5 V and produces output currents up to 500 mA. It incorporates a full-bridge output incorporating source-side linear operation, which produces a constant voltage supply across the motor coil. This regulated output minimises motor voltage change due to current variation and battery voltage tolerance. Two logic inputs are provided to control the motor’s direction of rotation, brake and standby modes, and to allow optional pulse-width modulation of the sink driver circuitry. Internal protection circuitry includes thermal shutdown, undervoltage lockout, and crossover (shoot-through) protection. Standby supply current is less than 500 nA.
The A3908 is supplied in a 2.0 x 2.0 x 0.575 mm 8-lead DFN package with exposed thermal pad (package suffix EE). This small footprint package is lead (Pb) free, with 100% matt tin leadframe plating. Operating temperature range is -40°C to +85°C.
