LASER World of PHOTONICS 2011 - Programme of related events at the show
LASER World of PHOTONICS 2011, which will be staged at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre from May 23 to 26, 2011, will give the international photonics industry new impetus for the twentieth time. The world’s leading trade fair will feature an extensive programme of related events and numerous opportunities to exchange technical information and know-how. The highlights of the supporting programme will be the practical talks during the World of Photonics Congress in the Photonics Forums, the CEO Round Table, the presentation by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) on its new promotion programme, other first-class events relating to photonics trends and the presentation of the Herbert Walther Award.
The world’s leading trade fair for optical technologies and the World of Photonics Congress jointly bring the international leaders in the photonics industry together in Munich every two years. The Congress will start one day before the trade fair on May 22, 2011 in the Munich International Congress Centre (ICM) and will run until May 26, 2011. Experts from research, industry and different application areas will discuss the major challenges of the twenty-first century – energy, the environment and health – from the viewpoint of optical technologies and will present the latest trends. The trade fair and Congress will be officially opened at 9.30 a.m. in Hall 1 in the ICM on May 23, 2011. The speakers during the opening ceremony will be Norbert Bargmann, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Management of Messe München GmbH, State Secretary Dr. Georg Schütte from the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research, and Prof. Dr. Peter Loosen, Chairman of the Steering Committee of the World of Photonics Congress.
The plenary talk will be given by Prof. Dr. Günter Huber from the Institute for Laser Physics of Hamburg University. A tour of the trade fair will then take place with State Secretary Georg Schütte and representatives of “photonik 2020”.
CEO Round Table on May 24, 2011
A CEO Round Table will be held on Stand B2.421 in Hall B2 from 10.30 to 11.30 on May 24, 2011 during the Photonics Forum. Four high-ranking representatives from the photonics industry will discuss their strategies relating to the topic “The response by optical technologies to social mega-trends – energy, health, infrastructure and security”. The participants in the podium discussion will be Dr. John R. Ambroseo, President and CEO of Coherent, David Marks, CEO of Qioptiq, Stuart Schoenmann, CEO of CVI Melles Griot and Dr. Ulrich Simon, President and CEO of Carl Zeiss MicroImaging GmbH. Attendance will be free of charge for all visitors. The discussion will be held in English.
Application panels during the Congress – practical talks
13 application panels will take place during the “Photonics Forums” in exhibition halls B1, B2 and C2 as part of the World of Photonics Congress. Exhibitors and users will present key topics every day. The talks will be open and admission will be included in the price of the trade fair ticket. The practical talks will lead to the exchange of know-how between researchers and users during the scientific World of Photonics Congress. The talks will be divided into three areas:

Presentation by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research
The presentation and podium discussion of the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) regarding the new promotion programme “Photonics 2020” will be staged during the Photonics Forum on Stand 421 in Hall B2 from 11.00 to 12.00 on May 23, 2011 under the motto “Innovation. Future Markets: Germany – The German strategy in the global race concerning photonics”.
The participants will be State Secretary Dr. Georg Schütte from the BMBF, Dr.-Ing. E.h. Peter Leibinger, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Management of TRUMPF GmbH + Co. KG and Chairman of the Laser Technology/Electronics Division, Prof. Dr. Andreas Tünnermann, Head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Mechanics (IOF), Jena, and Director of the Institute for Applied Physics of Friedrich Schiller University, Jena, Dr.-Ing. Michael Mertin, Chairman of the Board of Management of JENOPTIK AG, Martin Goetzeler, Member of the Board of Management of OSRAM GmbH, Prof. Bruno O. Braun, President of the Association of German Engineers (VDI), Member of “Innovation Dialogue between the German Federal Government, Industry and Science”, and Dr. Thomas M. Fraunhofer Innovation Cluster “Green Photonics”
The opening event of the Fraunhofer Innovation Cluster “Green Photonics” will take place during the Forum on Stand 421 in Hall B2 from 13.00 to 13.45 on May 24, 2011. The Cluster pools in a public-private partnership the forces of industry, science, the German Government and the Free State of Thuringia with the objective of developing new markets in important future areas for the photonics industry, thus creating the foundations for sustainable growth in Germany as a location for industrial production.
The welcoming remarks will be given by Dr. Alfred Gossner, Member of the Executive Board of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, State Secretary Jochen Staschewski, Thuringian Ministry of Economics, Employment and Technology, and Dr. Frank Schlie-Roosen, Head of the Photonics and Optical Technologies Department in the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research. Prof. Dr. Andreas Tünnermann, Green Photonics Coordinator and Head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Mechanics (IOF) will give a talk entitled “Green Photonics – Solutions for the future with light”. Dipl.-Ing. Martin Bitzer, Chairman of the Executive Board of OptoNet e. V. and Managing Director of Fresnel Optics GmbH will talk about “Networking in the region”.
Event series “Light Insights”
During the trade fair, “Light Insights” will feature numerous events relating to the economic and political aspects of the photonics industry.
- The “Analysts’ Conference”, which is being organised by the German Industrial Association for Optical, Medical and Mechatronic Technologies (SPECTARIS) and the German Stock Exchange, will be held from 09.30 to 16.45 on May 24, 2011 in Conference Room B32. Companies listed on the stock exchange will present themselves in this event to analysts, banks and media.
- Optical technologies offer different occupational opportunities and need young professionals. Together with the entire industry, Messe München has now been involved for many years in young professional initiatives in optical technologies from primary school through to university studies. Messe München will jointly present with bayern photonics, OptecNet Deutschland and the VDI Technology Centre, as the project sponsor of the BMBF, the “Innovation League”, which will take place at the West Entrance. This project will feature joint projects of companies and research institutes involved in optical technologies with schools. The “Innovation League” programme will be supplemented by guided tours for senior school students.
- The European initiative “Photonics 21” will present the “3rd Photonics21 Student Innovation Award” from 18.30 to 20.30 on May 25, 2011 during the EOS & Photonics21 Student Reception.
- The initiative “Photonics21” will also present the conclusions from the “Photonics Leverage Study” commissioned by the European Commission from 11.20 to 12.00 on May 26, 2011 during the Forum in Hall B2. The objective of this Study was to examine the importance of photonics for Europe.
World of Photonics Congress – Number 1 in Europe
The World of Photonics Congress, which will take place in the ICM from May 22 to 26, 2011, is the largest photonics congress in Europe and combines six conferences under one roof.
A new addition to the Congress programme is the “Optofluidics“ Conference, which is being organised by the European Optical Society (EOS). The Optical Metrology Conference has included an additional subconference on Videometrics in its programme while the European Conference on Biomedical Optics (ECBO) will examine clinically oriented topics in 2011 in addition to its previous programme contents. In the area of laser manufacturing, the Lasers in Manufacturing (LIM) Conference is an important event for manufacturers and users from the industry.
The plenary session at the opening of the World of Photonics Congress will be held in Hall 1 in the ICM on May 23, 2011 with Prof. Dr. G. Huber from the Institute for Laser Physics of Hamburg University on the topic of “Solid-state lasers: Advances and prospects”.
Presentation of the “Herbert Walther Award”
The “Herbert Walther Award” will be presented for the second time at the World of Photonics Congress during the plenary session of CLEO/Europe – EQEC from 10.30 to 12.30 on May 24, 2011 in Hall 1 of the ICM. This Award commemorates Professor Herbert Walther, a pioneer in the field of quantum physics and laser technology. It has been won this year by Marlan O. Scully, a physicist at Texas A&M and Princeton University. Prof. Scully will give a talk entitled “Standoff Spectroscopy via Remote Generation of Backward Lasing and/or Gain Swept Superradiance in Air” in Room 21 of the ICM from 14.00 to 14.30.
The Award, which is worth €5,000 to the winner, is presented for contributions from quantum optics and atomic physics, as well as for leadership in the international scientific community. The Herbert Walther Award is presented jointly and in turn annually by the Optical Society (OSA) and the German Physical Society.
“Biophotonics research groups”
The exhibition on the key BMBF research topic of photonics will be held on Stand 350 in Hall B1 from May 23 to 26, 2011. The subject of this exhibition will be “Treating Alzheimer’s, sepsis and cancer with light”. The exhibition will present photonic solutions for biological and medical problems, the potential of biophotonics and their benefits for patients, society and industry. The exhibits will illustrate successes and intermediate results of the current third and fourth biophotonics promotion round of the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research and the Technology Initiative on Molecular Imaging.
Special show “Photons in Production
The special show entitled “Photons in Production” will run daily throughout the trade fair on Stand 569 in Hall C1. The Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management (iwb, Munich Technical University) and the Bavarian Laser Centre (blz) will present here the latest trends in laser-based material processing for industrial production in cooperation with Messe München. The focal points of the special show will be technologies for resource-efficient production and manufacturing of environmentally-friendly products. This year’s motto “Green Solutions“ combines the three key topics of electromobility, lightweight construction using metallic materials and production technologies for (fibre-reinforced) plastics.
Career Centre
A job board containing job vacancies on offer at exhibitors will be available in the Career Centre at the West Entrance. Human resources experts from the wirth + partner consulting group will also provide free career advice here for young professionals and engineers with professional experience. Half-hourly career coaching sessions will take place on all three days of the trade fair from 10.00 to 17.00.
10th International Laser Marketplace
LASER World of PHOTONICS will stage the 10th International Laser Marketplace together with Optech Consulting. This English-language seminar on markets and trends in laser material processing will take place from 09.00 to 14.00 on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 in Hall 4 in the ICM. Admission to this event will be subject to a charge. It is aimed at managers in the laser industry. Leading world experts will discuss international markets, market developments and new applications and technologies. They will focus on industries such as automobile construction, aerospace, the job shop industry and solar cell manufacturing. Russia and India will be the main regional focal points.
