With energy efficiency top of the agenda, manufacturers of white goods for the home and OEMs developing servers, power distribution and communications equipment are turning to Teridian Semiconductor’s 78M6612 power outlet measurement and monitoring chip from Alpha Micro (www.alphamicro.net ) in a drive to cut costs for end users. “Energy costs are set to rise by as much as 60% by 20161”, said Christos Papakyriacou, Managing Director, Alpha Micro Components. “The impact is already being felt, with a growing demand from consumers for products that not only meet their requirements on a practical level, but ones that also help them to maintain a grip on their utility bills.”
Designed to help end users understand the AC power they are consuming, the Teridian 78M6612 offers best in class accuracy of +/-0.5%, over a 2000:1 dynamic range, with self-calibration to help facilitate rapid design time and optimal manufacturing efficiencies. Capable of operating at -40 to +85 deg C this new class of integrated circuit works effectively across the full industrial temperature range.

“Intelligent energy consumption begins with accurate and meaningful measurement”, said Christos. “Prior to the arrival of this chip, developers were forced to perform complex mathematical calculations to track and analyse power usage. Now they simply add this new chip to their system. As a technically competent distributor, we are able to support customers and help implement such technology into their systems.”

The 6612 is a highly integrated, single-phase, AC power measurement and monitoring SoC (System-On-Chip), which includes a 32-bit compute engine, an MPU core, real time clock and FLASH memory. Single Converter Technology™, with a 22-bit delta-sigma ADC and digital temperature compensation, supports a wide range of single-phase, dual outlet power measurement applications, on only 25mW of power. Complete firmware is available along with reference designs to enable rapid development of power and energy measurement solutions that meet the most demanding worldwide standards.

Sample and production quantities of Teridian’s 78M6612 are available now in both 64 pin LQFP and 68 pin QFN packages. 78M6612 demo kits and eval boards are also available.
