Now available in the UK from Aerco is a new model in the range of two-axis, non-contacting mini displacement joysticks from Ultra Electronics MSI. The model 5000C, the world’s first joystick of this type, was launched in 2007 and the new 500C is introduced to extend the application range. It is of a more traditional design and is intended for use with finger and thumb as opposed to the 5000C that was for use with finger or thumb. In addition, the 500C is mounted and sealed from below the panel whereas the 5000C is designed for mounting from above.
Using patented Hall-Effect technology, introduced by Ultra Electronics MSI in 1998, this new generation of non-contacting joysticks offer a more ‘familiar’ feel than mini force joysticks converting operator input to analogue output voltages proportional to the angle of joystick movement.

Its small size and weight make the 500C an ideal solution where precision control is required and joystick displacement is preferred but a larger device is not practical. It provides a truly linear output over 18º joystick deflection in all directions with a full scale output force of 1.15lb. Operating temperature is -32ºC to +85ºC and sealing is IP67 above panel and IP55 below panel.

With a body diameter of only 30mm, these joysticks are among the smallest devices of their kind and with a product life of 20 million cycles, low power consumption and an EMI immunity that is superior to inductive joysticks; they provide a high integrity precision alternative to less reliable potentiometer joysticks. They will find applications in computer graphics cursor control, mapping systems, X-Y inspection tables, robotics, medical applications, security cameras, manned and unmanned flight control systems and all types of vehicle control from hoists and cranes to electric vehicles.
