Taiyo Yuden Announces Industry’s First 4.7µF MLCC in 0402 Case Size — One Device Provides the Capacitance of Two Typical 0402 Components

TAIYO YUDEN, INC., announces the mass production availability of its new AMK105BJ475MV multi-layer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) for decoupling power-line circuits in high-performance ICs used in cell phones, digital still cameras and other battery-powered portable electronics. The AMK105BJ is the first MLCC to achieve a capacitance rating of 4.7μF in the 1.0 × 0.5 × 0.5mm (EIA 0402) case size. The AMK105BJ allows designers to obtain the desired capacitance value from a single 0402-size device, where two 2.2µF-rated 0402 capacitors were previously required. This saves cost and simplifies manufacturability by reducing parts count by 50 percent for this application. Moreover, the AMK105BJ allows designers to downsize from 0603 size components (1.6 × 0.8 × 0.8mm) to the more compact 0402 size, resulting in space savings of 76 percent (volume) and 61 percent (area) without sacrificing device performance.
The considerable size reduction of the AMK105BJ effectively doubles available capacitance for the same component mounting area. The benefits to the OEM are more compact, higher-performance equipment through reduced number of components, increased mounting density and higher capacitance. The continuing trend in portable device miniaturization is driving the need for capacitors with small case sizes and high capacitance values. Three years ago, TAIYO YUDEN responded by reducing the diameter of its dielectric particles to the 0.2μm level while maintaining performance characteristics. This achievement resulted in the industry’s first high-value MLCCs rated at 10μF in 0603 and 2.2μF in 0402. Since then, further improvements in material science and fabrication processes have resulted in the development and production of multi-layer green sheets that are 30% thinner than before, enabling a capacitance value of 4.7μF—more than twice the capacitance of previous 0402-size components.



Similar processes are now being used to mass produce two other high-value, high-performance MLCCs—a 22µF device in 0603 case size (AMK107BJ226MA) and a 0.47μF device in 0201 (AMK063BJ474MP).
