Vishay has introduced the E102Z ultra-high-precision Bulk Metal Z-Foil resistor. The new device provides a military-grade absolute TCR of ±0.2 ppm/°C from −55°C to +125°C, +25°C ref., a tolerance from ±0.005% (50 ppm), and a load-life stability of ±0.005% (50 ppm) at +70°C for 2000 hours at rated power. The E102Z is built to handle unconventional environmental conditions with minimal drift, making it well suited for military, space, and medical applications according to EEE-INST-002 specifications and MIL-PRF 55182.
With the new E102Z resistor, resistance values as high as 250 kΩ can be achieved in a single Bulk Metal Foil device, while maintaining the lead spacing and long-term stability of the lower-range Z201 resistor. Within a resistance range of 100 kΩ to 250 kΩ, any value is available through calibration at no additional cost or lead time effect.

A change in a resistor's resistance values can render a circuit unreliable. Thus more and more designers are including resistors that can retain their initial resistance value in service. Together, the E102Z and Z201 offer any value from 1 Ω to 250 kΩ in a device that can retain its initial accuracy to within several parts per million. For designers, this means that the instrument calibration cycle can be extended. In applications where no calibration cycle is possible, such as space applications, the designer can rely on the anticipated shifts or specify further stabilization to ensure compliance with the end-of-life design criteria.

While other resistor technologies can take several seconds or even minutes to achieve a steady-state thermal stabilization, the E102Z has an almost instantaneous thermal stabilization time of < 1 second, and a nearly immeasurable 1.0-ns rise time with effectively no ringing. The ultimate resistor for analog applications, the device is built to handle unconventional environmental conditions above and below the surface with minimal drift. Its construction guarantees a high level of reliability, and provides high resistance to thermal shock, moisture, mechanical shock, and vibrations.

Offering the utmost in ESD immunity, the E102Z withstands electrostatic discharges up to 25 kV, for increased reliability. The device is available with lead (Pb)-free or tin/lead alloy terminations, and offers 0.15-in lead spacing. The resistor is available in a 0.2-in version, the E102JZ.

Typical applications for the E102Z include dc-to-dc converters, feedback circuits, and precision amplifiers in test and measurement instrumentation; medical and automatic test equipment; satellites, aerospace, and weapons systems; commercial and military avionics; down-hole equipment and instrumentation; and weigh scales.

Samples and production quantities of the E102Z are available now, with lead times of 72 hours for samples, and five weeks for standard orders.
