Ultra-small white LEDs for lighting applications
Designed as light sources for general lighting, including straight tube lights, light bulbs and ceiling lights, the TL1WK series of ultra-small chip scale package white LEDs have been announced by Toshiba. Compared to conventional 3.0x1.4mm package products, these LEDs can reduce the mounting area by up to 90%.
These LEDs utilise gallium nitride-on-silicon (GaN-on-Si) process technology and a new process technology that fabricates the elements of a packaged LED on an 8" silicon wafer. Toshiba claim that the LEDs are the industry’s smallest in sub-watt class (0.25-0.5W) white LEDs, with a package size of just 0.65x0.65mm, but they achieve a luminous efficacy of 130lm/W and superior heat dissipation. Forward current is up to 180mA.
The white LEDs make it possible to achieve a narrow beam in small-size lighting equipment and can contribute to innovation in lighting design. The first device has a colour temperature of 5000K and a colour rendering index Ra of 80, other colour temperature variations including 4000K, 3000K and 2700K are also under development.
The TL1WK LEDs will be showcased at “Light+Building”, a trade fair for lighting and architecture in Frankfurt, Germany from March 30th to April 4th. Sample shipments will start in April.
