Enabling smartphones and tablets to record full HD video at 240fps equivalent, the T4K82 is a 13MP BSI CMOS image sensor from Toshiba. This sensor incorporates ‘Bright Mode’ technology which boosts image brightness by up to four times, realising full HD video capture at that high frame rate, which the company claim to be the industry's highest.

It can be difficult to increase the frame rate of high-speed video recording, since it usually yields underexposed images with short exposure times. ‘Bright Mode’ technology secures double the exposure time by adopting interlaced video output rather than the progressive output used by standard CMOS sensors. Thanks to this ‘Bright Mode’ technology, Toshiba’s T4K82 allows smartphones and tablets to record high-quality, high-speed video, and to offer extended imaging functions including smooth slow motion playback and high-speed continuous shooting.

The T4K82 utilises a newly developed low power circuit design, which reduces power consumption to 82% that of its predecessor, the T4K37 13MP sensor. With a pixel pitch of 1.12μm and satisfying the 1/3.07" optical format, the image sensor is recommended for 8.5x8.5mm module size. For full HD (1920x1080) and HD (1280x720) capture, the maximum output frame rate for the T4K82 in normal mode and Bright Mode is 120 and 240fps, respectively. This increases to 240 and 480fps for WVGA (800x480) and VGA (640x480) and is up to 480 and 900fps for QVGA (320x240). Toshiba's sensor offers normal mode output at 30fps for output modes of 13M (4208x3120) and 4K2K (3840x2160).

Sample shipments of Toshiba's T4K82 13MP image sensor will start in March 2014 with mass production planned for September 2014.
