Focus images after photos are taken
Focusing images after a photo has been taken is now a possibility with the introduction of Toshiba's dual camera module. Claiming to be the industry's first dual camera module to incorporate twin 1/4 inch optical format 5 megapixel CMOS camera modules (5 megapixels x 2 arrays), the TCM9518MD is able to simultaneously output recorded images and depth data. TEE has started sample shipments of the dual camera module, which is designed for use in smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.
The dedicated image processing IC of the TCM9518MD measures and appends depth data to objects in the image. Used in combination with customers' applications, the module supports new photo functions such as focus and defocus, and even allows objects in photographs to be extracted and erased. Supporting a digital focus function, the module enables users to adjust the point of focus without needing a mechanism to move the lenses.
By upscaling images taken by the twin 5 megapixel cameras, the image processing IC is able to generate 13 megapixel images. The CMOS sensors have a pixel size of 1.4 micrometers and the module measures 18.0 mm x 12.0 mm x 4.65 mm - realizing a lower module height than that of conventional 13 megapixel camera modules.
