Diffraction Gratings

At LASER COMPONENTS we offer a wide range of diffraction gratings that can be used in a variety of different applications including instrumental analysis, astronomical applications, and in laser systems. Our partner OPTOMETRICS CORP. have the capability to manufacture a range of products from simple optical components to modules and complete computer driven systems including grating design software.
There are many factors to consider when choosing a grating:



Efficiency: we can offer both ruled and holographic forms. Ruled gratings offer a higher efficiency than holographic. Therefore ruled gratings may be more suited for applications involving fluorescence and reactions induced by radiation.



Blaze Wavelength: holographic gratings exhibit a flatter spectral response whereas ruled have a sharp peak around the blaze wavelength caused by their ‘sawtooth’ profile. Users requiring a narrow wavelength range may benefit from our ruled gratings.



Wavelength Range: dependant on the groove spacing, both ruled and holographic share the same spectral range with the same grating constant. Twice the grating period is equal to the maximum wavelength the grating can achieve.



Stray Light: holographic gratings demonstrate low stray light, it is for this reason that when signal-to-noise ratio is critical i.e. in raman spectroscopy, a holographic grating would be beneficial.



Resolving Power: resolving power is identical for both forms of gratings. However holographic gratings are available up to 3600 grooves per mm whilst rule gratings do not normally exceed 1200 grooves per mm.



With full replication capabilities, gratings can be produced on float glass, Pyrex or Zerodur and can be coated using aluminium achieving an average of 90% reflectance from 200nm to FIR, dropping to 85% between 750nm-900nm. However, in some fibre-optic applications when maximum reflectance in the NIR is required gold over coating is used achieving 96% and 98% over 2µm.



We can also offers an extensive range of standard filters, wire grid polarisers (ruled and holographic) and beamsplitters. Also known as “polka- dot” beamsplitters, the aluminium coating is applied in apertures, giving a ‘polka dot ‘appearance allowing the beam to be split by reflection from the coating or transmitted through the non-coated region. These are useful over wide wavelength ranges and for splitting energy emitted from a radiant source.

As always, we have an extensive range of standard products, however any of the standard gratings available can be integrated into the Mini-Chrom monochromators to suit your exact requirements. Last but not least, is the SPF Analyser designed to determine the SPF values of a variety of cosmetic products, reducing the need for in-vivo testing.
