Broadcom Unveils Industry's Highest-Density 10G-EPON Optical Line Terminal Family
Broadcom Corporation today introduced the BCM5553x family, the industry's highest-density dual, quad and octal port single-chip 10G-EPON Optical Line Terminals (OLTs). Designed to address high-speed connectivity and quality of service (QoS) requirements of residential triple-play services including video-on-demand (VoD), HD-IPTV, voice over IP (VoIP) and high-speed Internet (HIS), the BCM5553x series of OLT system-on-chips (SoCs) deliver 10x more bandwidth.2.
When combined with the BCM88350 family of integrated single-chip traffic manager/packet processors and the ultra-low power, small footprint BCM55030 optical network unit (ONU) SoC, the BCM5553x 10G EPON OLT family delivers a complete high-performance chipset platform. The end-to-end solution allows system OEMs to address telco and cable multi service operator (MSO) markets with faster time-to-market, lower power and cost per port, and uncompromising carrier-grade quality of service (QoS) for next-generation FTTX access networks.
The BCM5553x family offers support for both 10 Gbps (10G) symmetric and asymmetric data rates combined with 1 Gpbs (1G)-EPON co-existence on a single fiber, while enabling 3G/LTE mobile backhaul and enterprise business services on a common fiber access network. With unified management, the BCM5553x family delivers a scalable and flexible fiber access solution for both telco and cable MSOs.
For fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) multi-dwelling unit (MDU) applications, the BCM5553x product family enables service providers to simultaneously support current 1G-EPON subscribers through 1G/10G co-existence, while allowing the gradual upgrade of new subscribers to 10G-EPON for increased bandwidth on the same fiber with a simple OLT line card upgrade. For fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) deployments, Broadcom's 10G OLT SoCs empower next-generation digital homes to fully support ultra-high-speed, latency-sensitive services such as 3D TV and advanced interactive Internet gaming, elevating broadband user experiences to the next level.

As content consumption by both consumers and businesses continues to drive traffic growth, providers must meet increasing demand for higher bandwidth to more subscribers. Broadcom's BCM5553x family of 10G OLT SoCs builds on the market's most complete EPON and GPON product portfolio, enabling a new class of services previously unavailable via other forms of broadband and creating revenue-generating services for global telco and cable multi-service operators while reducing CapEx and OpEx.

In the Asia Pacific region and especially in China, major operators are investing in heavily in EPON, a trend we expect to continue throughout 2015. As focus increases on introducing subscribers to the new infrastructure, scalable and flexible 10G EPON OLT solutions such as Broadcom's BCM5553x series of SoCs will play an important role in increasing adoption rates over the next three years.
