13MP image sensor is claimed to be world’s smallest

The T4KB3, a 13MP BackSide Illumination (BSI) CMOS image sensor with an optical format of 1/3.07", has been announced by Toshiba Electronics Europe. Offering video capture at up to 120fps with full 1080p HD, the image sensor's small form factor is suited for use in ever slimmer high end smartphones and tablets.

The T4KB3 makes use of newly developed Toshiba design techniques to deliver what is claimed to be the world’s smallest 13MP sensor. Low power circuitry has reduced power consumption to 53% of that used by the preceding T4K82 image sensor. The chip can achieve 200mW, or less at 30fps, with full 13MP output.

Image brightness is boosted by four times by utilising Bright Mode technology. The sensor is fitted with 8Kb OTP memory and lens shading correction data for two conditions can be stored. This permits different correction data for indoor or outdoor use.

The T4KB3 measures 8.5x8.5mm, with auto focus, and 6.7x6.7mm with a static focus. Samples are available now.
