The demand for wireless medical applications such as remote patient monitoring, real-time diagnostic analysis, smart surgical systems, and implantable sensors has grown over the last couple of years. Thanks to implanted medical devices, many patients live an almost normal life without having their mobility compromised. Popular implants include cardiac pacemakers, implantable defibrillators, nerve stimulators (functional electrical stimulation, FES), bladder stimulators, implantable infusion pumps, biomonitoring devices such as the capsule endoscope and implantable drug delivery systems. A patient’s quality of life is vastly improved by implants using wireless communication; the risk of inflammation and infection, often caused by connecting wires and tubes, is reduced, as well as being more convenient. |

Early intervention could prevent many of the 160,000 deaths from colon cancer in Europe each year. Colonoscopies, the gold standard for spotting bowel cancer early, can still miss up to 20% of precancerous cells. But now, thanks to a pan-European health consortium, a new concept that uses photonics to help doctors spot bowel cancer could soon prevent up to half of these deaths and save €9bn in reduced healthcare costs. |
