Susan Wojcicki, best known for her pivotal role at YouTube, has passed away after two years of living with cancer.

Early career and contributions to Google

Wojcicki began her career in the technology sector at Intel and later at Bain & Company, but her journey took a turn when she joined Google in its early days. In 1999, Wojcicki became the company’s first marketing manager, working from her garage, which famously doubled as Google’s first headquarters.

During her tenure at Google, Wojcicki developed critical products, including Google Images and AdSense, which became a cornerstone of the company’s advertising revenue model. AdSense, in particular, became a major source of revenue for Google and remains integral to the company’s business model.

Leadership at YouTube

In 2014, Wojcicki was appointed CEO of YouTube, a position she held for nearly a decade, and under her leadership, YouTube grew exponentially, becoming one of the world’s largest and most influential video platforms, with over two billion users globally.

Whilst at YouTube, Wojcicki oversaw initiatives, including the introduction of subscription services like YouTube Red (now YouTube Premium), YouTube TV, and YouTube Kids which diversified the platform’s offerings.
