An inspirational award-winning young British engineer, dubbed the ‘Raducanu of Engineering’, has been praised for her role developing a robotic pharmaceutical testing system now on the health frontline.
Women in STEM are leading innovation: here’s why
It was not always the case that women were significantly involved in STEM. When the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) was founded in 1880 there was not a single female member – that milestone took a further 38 years, with Kate Gleason becoming the first woman to join - in 1918.
Opening doors for Britain's women of STEM
2019 figures from the UK Government state that there are now just over one million women in the STEM workforce. This translates to an increase of more than 350,000 women (24%) entering these areas of work. While this may be encouraging to hear, there is still a long way to go for gender equality in these male-dominated industries.
The importance of female representation in the data centre sector
There’s been talk of a skill shortage in IT of late, but that has long been the case for female professionals in this industry. With only a fraction of the UK’s female workforce operating in IT, this is a massive limitation on the potential scale of who could be qualified to work in the sector. In 2019 the proportion of female staff in tech in the UK, sat at just 16%, incredibly, this equates to the same figure as a decade before. Ano...
Real experiences of women in engineering and maritime
Currently, women represent only two percent of the maritime industry, while only eight percent of employees in engineering are women. This is in stark contrast to the UK workforce as a whole, of which women make up 47%. Abi Thompson, Project Manager, and Georgia Jones, Senior Strategic Buyer, at subsea engineering company SMD, share their experiences of women in engineering.
Meet the female engineers creating a more sustainable world
Two women are leading the way in automated environmental sensing and waste tracking. Marie-Pierre Ducharme, Mouser Electronics reports.

Women in space: Female engineers at the forefront of space exploration
You could be forgiven for assuming that the space industry is almost entirely male dominated because in the very early days of space exploration, that was mostly true. However, as early as 1963, Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first of many women in space as part of the Vostok 6 mission. Exactly two decades later, in 1983, Sally Ride flew aboard the Space Shuttle STS-7, becoming the first American female in space. In fact, women...
A voice for unsung heroes
Yesterday, International Women in Engineering Day (IWED) took place as a global celebration of females in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) field. This year’s campaign follows the theme ’Engineering Heroes’ to celebrate female engineers who recognise a problem, then dare to be part of the solution. As one of the leading women working in the research and development team at Exel Composites, Tiina Uotila ...
