The pressing question, "How can we combat the decline in biodiversity?" was a focal point at DLD Nature, held from 12-13 September 2024 in Munich.

During this event, Würth Elektronik, in collaboration with its new partner Hula Earth—a deep-tech start-up specialising in real-time biodiversity monitoring—presented a Tech Talk titled 'Electronics for Innovation in Nature Protection'.

Hula Earth's real-time data collection forms the basis for issuing biodiversity certificates in line with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). These certificates help monetise species protection and promote sustainable investment. A key concept discussed was 'insetting,' which focuses on improving operational processes in an environmentally sustainable way, with these actions verified by concrete, measurable data.

Hula Earth’s solar-powered BioT sensors collect biodiversity-related data continuously, transmitting the information via wireless networks, even from remote forested areas. The collected data is then combined with satellite imagery, analysed using AI, and integrated into an accessible platform for users.

Collaborating for a sustainable future

Würth Elektronik and Hula Earth are now working together to optimise the prototype BioT sensors, moving towards efficient large-scale production. Würth Elektronik is supporting the start-up in several key areas, including:

  • Supplying components and expertise, particularly in areas like electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) safety, energy management, scalability, and functionality. Many existing components are being replaced with more suitable alternatives to enhance longevity and reliability. For instance, the WSEN-HIDS humidity and temperature sensor and the ADRASTEA wireless module will be employed for communication between sensors and cloud-based evaluation systems

  • Providing assistance with prototyping and testing, including pre-compliance tests. This allows devices to be optimised in advance to ensure they pass accredited laboratory tests, saving both time and money

  • Offering design-in support, covering circuit board design, interface planning, and communication software

"Hula Earth is a startup that tackles the problems of our time and enables real-time monitoring of biodiversity for the first time,” said Alexander Gerfer, CTO at Würth Elektronik eiSos. “And, we are going to get involved: We take responsibility for our habitat and our future, we promote technologies that are not only innovative but also sustainable.”

"Würth Elektronik has the expertise, the manpower, and the technology to drive our idea forward together,” added David Schmider, CTO of Hula Earth. “For us, the global player is the ideal cooperation partner in every respect."
