At electronica 2022, on the Digi-Key booth, Paige West speaks with Konrad Scheuer, Strategic Applications Engineer, ADI about IO-Link, what is it and where/how it is used as well as ADI’s newest IO-Link Transceiver and Reference Designs.

Analog Devices Inc (ADI) is a global semiconductor specialist who bridge the physical and digital worlds together to help breakthroughs at the intelligent edge.

“IO link is a point-to-point communication protocol designed to support people in the field to do installation, simplify setup and installing and provide additional parameters than just the actual measurement value, and also to allow parameterisation in the field.”

Mainly used in factory automation, the biggest benefit is its interoperability.

Some typical examples of end devices with IO link are sensors (distance and temperature), or actuators that act the drive valves.

API's newest IO link transceiver is the max 22 514 which is a highly integrated device transceiver.

“It integrates the protection … Reverse polarity is integrated, we also integrate surge protection, as well as the DC/DC converter. We also integrate LDO [Low Dropout].”

The evaluation kit is a PCB, which has everything to evaluate the chip. It is fully assembled with a USB interface. and has a GUI provided, to allow it to be configured to read all the diagnostic information to make adjustments.

The MAXREFDES278# is a complete IO link eight channel solenoid actuator reference design based on the max 22 514 I0 link transceiver.
