Paige West speaks with Orr Danon, CEO & Co-Founder, Hailo about their recent partnership with Raspberry Pi to enable advanced AI capabilities for the Raspberry Pi 5.

In 2017, Orr Danon, along with his co-founders, embarked on a journey to transform how AI operates at the Edge, launching Hailo.

One of Hailo’s recent developments is its partnership with Raspberry Pi, aimed at enabling advanced AI capabilities on the Raspberry Pi 5. This collaboration brings Hailo’s AI expertise to a broader audience, combining the versatility of the Raspberry Pi platform with the powerful AI capabilities of the Hailo-8 processor.

Danon described the partnership as a natural move: “For us to collaborate with Raspberry Pi and support them in bringing their AI kit to the market based on our Hailo-8 chip was a natural move in this direction.” The partnership exemplifies Hailo’s focus on Edge AI – AI that operates in low-power environments, integrated into the physical world, as opposed to the centralised, data centre-focused approach favoured by some of its competitors.

The Hailo-8 processor stands out in the market due to its efficiency and performance, particularly in embedded AI applications. It is engineered to operate within a constrained thermal budget, crucial for devices where active cooling solutions are impractical.

The Hailo-8 is designed to deliver the maximum possible frames per second per unit of power consumption, making it ideal for video processing tasks that require handling millions of pixels per second. The processor’s efficiency allows it to handle high computational loads without exceeding the thermal constraints typical of embedded systems.

The partnership between Hailo and Raspberry Pi is just the beginning. The potential applications of this technology are vast, ranging from home security and gaming to robotics and medical devices. Danon highlighted some of the innovative uses already being explored: “We’ve seen applications in the robotic space, in the medical domain, patient care, and more. The possibilities are truly endless.”

Looking ahead, Hailo plans to continue expanding the applications supported by its processors and to develop new products that further enhance AI capabilities at the Edge. Danon articulated Hailo’s long-term vision: “We aspire to be the default solution for AI acceleration at the Edge.” As AI becomes ubiquitous in everyday devices, Hailo is positioning itself to be at the forefront of this transformation.
