Peter Kyle pushes for stronger US-UK AI ties
UK Technology Secretary Peter Kyle will showcase Britain’s credentials as the global hub for AI investment during his visit to the US, aiming to ‘bang the drum’ for a closer AI partnership with the US.
He will emphasise how the UK and US can further develop their relationship in the age of AI to strengthen AI safety, drive innovation and ensure both nations remain at the forefront of responsible AI development as the UK integrates the technology into its ‘Plan for Change’.
During his tour, Peter Kyle is meeting with leading US tech companies including Open AI, Anthropic, Nvidia, and Vantage, in a bid to strengthen the trans-Atlantic relationship and work on a new economic deal centred on advanced technologies.
Perttu Nihti, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Basware, commented: “Really, we’re at the AI tipping point for businesses and industries. Amid an economic squeeze, particularly in the US, CFOs and CIOs are being tasked with focusing on high-value wins, such as AI-powered efficiency that demonstrate quantifiable ROI quickly, in areas such as compliance and fraud detection, which will help justify investment across a company’s organisation.
“International collaboration between the United States and the UK is, therefore, a welcome sight for businesses, strengthening investment ties between government organisations, enterprises, and research firms to jointly advance AI innovation. The fascination around AI will continue to remain high, so showcasing use cases that demonstrate short-term ROI and optimise costs, particularly given the turbulent economic climate, is an important message on a global stage to attract investors and further AI’s development.”
Speaking at Nvidia’s annual conference in San Jose, Peter Kyle will outline how the government is ‘rewiring’ Britain’s economy to run on AI and seizing transformative opportunities presented as Britain becomes a by-word for innovation. Currently valued at $92 billion, the UK’s AI sector is projected to surpass $1 trillion by 2035, establishing the UK as the second leading AI nation in the democratic world.
Stuart Harvey, CEO of Datactics, commented: “AI is already transforming both public sector and business operations, and there are no signs of a slowdown in adoption, but without a strong data foundation, unlocking full value will be a challenge. Peter Kyle building relationships with top US tech companies and banging the drum for investment and global leadership is important, but the key to AI success is having clean, well-structured data and this must be part of the conversation.
“Rushing ahead to implement AI systems, overlooking the importance of data quality, governance and readiness, can be a costly mistake, especially during a period of economic uncertainty, so it’s vital that data leaders ensure their organisation has the right data frameworks in place to set AI projects up for success.”
By emphasising Britain’s readiness for AI investment, the Tech Secretary will highlight the potential for transformation of former industrial sites into AI Growth Zones and outline how, with faster planning approvals and improved power access, it will support the UK’s most advanced compute infrastructure to date. With hundreds of proposals already submitted, the initiative is set to drive economic growth, create jobs, and raise living standards, aligning with the Government’s Plan for Change.
Backed by major US investments, including a £12 billion commitment from Vantage Data Centres and a partnership with Anthropic, the UK is strengthening its AI sectors and strengthening collaborations.
The UK is a pipeline of opportunity and by harnessing overseas partnerships and investments, the UK’s AI sector is set for continued growth and will drive innovation by eliminating barriers to advancement.
