MediaTek’s most powerful Chromebook processor yet
MediaTek has unveiled the Kompanio Ultra, marking a significant step forward in AI-powered, high-performance Chromebooks. I attended the launch webinar to find out more information.
The Kompanio Ultra platform enhances on-device AI capabilities, computing efficiency, and power management in the newest Chromebook Plus devices.
Adam King, Vice President & General Manager of Computing and Multimedia Business at MediaTek, highlighted the company’s vision: “The Kompanio Ultra underscores our commitment to delivering groundbreaking computing performance and efficiency that MediaTek has shown as a leader in the mobile compute space for many years. We worked closely with Google to ensure the newest Chromebook Plus devices enjoy next-generation on-device AI capabilities, superior performance per watt, and immersive multimedia.”
As MediaTek’s most advanced Chromebook processor yet, the Kompanio Ultra integrates 50 TOPS of AI processing power, enabling seamless on-device generative AI experiences. Equipped with MediaTek’s 8th-generation NPU, it supports real-time task automation, personalised computing, and AI-enhanced workflows – all processed locally for improved speed, security, and efficiency, eliminating the need for an Internet connection.
Built on a cutting-edge 3nm process, the Kompanio Ultra features an all-big-core CPU architecture, incorporating an Arm Cortex-X925 processor clocked at up to 3.62GHz. This architecture ensures robust single- and multithreaded performance, making it ideal for demanding applications such as video editing, content creation, and high-resolution gaming – all while maintaining smooth, responsive multitasking.
John Solomon, VP and GM, ChromeOS and Google for Education at Google, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration: “We're excited for the next step in our MediaTek partnership. The Kompanio Ultra will open up new avenues for on-device AI features on Chromebook Plus devices, while delivering awesome power efficiency for those crucial extra hours while on the go.”
Designed for high-performance workloads, the Kompanio Ultra prioritises power efficiency, ensuring extended battery life without compromising speed. MediaTek’s advanced power management and large on-chip caches optimise energy consumption, enabling users to work, stream, and game for longer on a single charge.
The processor also supports seamless multitasking and entertainment with multi-display compatibility for up to two external 4K monitors. Additionally, advanced Hi-Fi audio processing enhances call clarity and immersive sound quality.
For ultra-fast and reliable connectivity, the Kompanio Ultra is equipped with Wi-Fi 7, offering superior range and low-latency performance. Its efficient thermal design allows for quiet, cool operation, making it ideal for lightweight and portable Chromebooks.
Chromebooks featuring the MediaTek Kompanio Ultra are set to launch in the coming months.
