Staying cool during the UK heatwave
Climate change is bringing more extreme heat, something we are all experiencing for the next few days as the Met Office has put a red warning in place. Temperatures are expected to exceed 43°C in some parts of the UK. Fabiana Iantosca, Nottingham Trent University student discusses ways different technology can help you to stay cool during the UK's heatwave.
This is going to cause the use of air conditioning to rise extremely quickly which will be damaging to the environment. To combat this, at Columbia University, a panel covered with a novel polymer film radiates heat through the atmosphere to outer space. Creating its surroundings to be dramatically cooler. This new technology could be a way of helping people cool down without the use of electricity, reducing the need for air-conditioning.
Temperature regulating robot
Another technological advancement to help stay fresh is with a temperature regulating robot. The roving comforter, also known as RoCo is a robot that regulates the temperature in your personal space by following you around. To do this it tracks your phone and then can blow cool air towards your face and feet. The robots can’t be found on the market currently but hope to be one day in the future.
Air-cooling chair
Or if having a new friend doesn’t interest you, an air-cooling chair that will help your comfort may take your fancy. Perfect for professional gamers this chair comes with a 3-fan speed controller that gamers can modify to their own cooling preferences. The aerodynamic design of the seat allows streamlined airflow to be directed straight through the seat via compression. Therefore, preventing air loss for maximum efficiency as well as its unique ventilation holes contributing to your comfort.
Thermoregulation clothing
If you’re into fashion, keep an eye out for thermoregulation clothing. Clothes mainly used for athletes could be hitting the high street if the weather stays like this for long. This type of sportswear aims to moderate the insulative effect of clothing to help heat loss via sweat evaporation whilst maintaining optimal comfort for individual.
Furniture
Additionally, a zero-energy furniture climatic table could also be a future purchase. This piece of furniture can cool a room and retain the heat to release later when the temperature drops. The phase-changing material absorbs and lets out the heat to keep room temperature around 22°C. The tables come in a range of sizes so there is a ZEF table for every purpose.
Temperature-controlled mattress topper
As an alternative method of keeping cold, the Kyro Cooling System could aid a better night sleep during this heatwave. The temperature-controlled mattress topper is made up of a mattress pad and control system that can cool the pad to less than 16°C. It works using a water-based thermos regulation and operates using a WIFI enabled smartphone app, so users can control their preferred temperature.
There are many other ways to stay hydrated and cool this, summer, including drinking lots of water and closing your curtains and blinds. The heatwave is set to continue until Wednesday where the temperature will drop, however, it looks as though it will pick up again next week. Hopefully some of the ways suggested in this article will help you to stay that little bit cooler!
