IET Archives awarded national accreditation

Accreditation is the UK quality standard that recognises good performance in all areas of archive service delivery. Achieving accredited status demonstrates the IET has met clearly defined national standards relating to management and resourcing; the care of its unique collections and what the service offers to its entire range of users.

The IET Archives collect and retain material relating to the IET and its predecessor institutions, as well as the history of engineering and technology. Its collections cover innovation and developments in these areas from the fourteenth century to the present day. It preserves the records of the IET’s 150-year history, including material from the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), Institution of Electronic and Radio Engineers (IERE), Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE) and the Institution of Manufacturing Engineers (IMfgE) who were formerly the Institution of Production Engineers (IProdE).

Anne Locker, Library and Archives Manager at the IET, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to receive this national accreditation. As one of the world’s oldest professional institutions, we have a rich history which we can trace back to the foundation of the Society of Telegraph Engineers, which held its first meeting in London in May 1871.

“Engineers throughout the ages have shaped the way we live today, and although the world has changed since Victorian times, one thing that still connects us with our history is that engineers continue to solve many of the challenges facing communities across the globe – making an ongoing difference to the world around us.”
