The coolest stand at NEW?
Agile new business Thermal Issues could claim to have had the coolest stand at this year’s National Electronics Week exhibition. The company was the only supplier of tailored thermal management solutions on the show floor. Equally cool was the very warm reception given to the company’s imaginative business model.
Formed in 2104, exhibiting at NEW was the first public exposure of Thermal Issues’ standard range of thermal interface material parts as well as its flexible, fast-turn capability to manufacture bespoke designs. Behind the bespoke service is a business model that makes it exceptionally easy for assemblers, OEMs and component suppliers to partner with Thermal Issues. Customers with unique designs are not charged for the tooling required to develop parts. They only pay for the finished product.
The appeal of this initiative was apparent in the high level of interest the company enjoyed at National Electronics Week. “We picked up more leads on the first day than we expected to get from the whole show,” claims Neil Wilson, Director and Founder, Thermal Issues. “Enquiries were evenly split between prospects looking for thermal management solutions and those seeking electrical isolation from our materials portfolio,” he notes.
But it was the company’s unusual approach to the initial stages of prototyping that garnered most support from visitors. “It’s rewarding to witness the justification of our ‘tooling-for-free’ business proposition. Everyone loved that idea and agreed that it made life much easier. From our perspective, we are completely confident thanks to our 30-plus years’ experience in the design and manufacture of thermal solutions for electronics. We know what we’re doing,” says Wilson.
Thermal Issues partners with customers from concept through to prototype for bespoke designs. The company operates an in-house design service to create 2D drawings used to drive its state-of-the-art die-cutter platforms. Experience allows the company to determine materials with the most appropriate electrical isolation and thermal conductivity properties to deliver a high performance and reliable product every time.
