During the last week of September 2022, Sandvik Coromant hosted Tech Days, an annual event where world leading manufacturing companies come together to share ideas for industry.

This year’s Tech Days was the first following a two-year hiatus and proved to be among the most successful to date, bringing together more than 600 visitors and eighteen partners to the Sandvik Coromant Centre in Sandviken, Sweden, where the event was held.

Tech Days focused on two core themes affecting the manufacturing industry: digitalisation and sustainability. Both of these topics were explored in panel discussions to consider the subject matters in depth. Working with sustainability in the manufacturing industry welcomed Camilla Nevstad Bruzelius, Head of Sustainable Business and Erik Jansson, Sales Cluster Manager Nordic from Sandvik Coromant.

“Sustainability has gone from being something that is talked about as a buzzword, to something that all businesses are taking part in. We see customers and companies being very active, and others that are just beginning to ask what they need to do to get started on their sustainability journey. There has been a big shift,” explained Jansson.

Bruzelius agreed, “There is a huge pressure on the industry to deliver on sustainability. When talking to customers, we see that their top priority is to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions, to become landfill free and to close the loop by becoming circular.”

The manufacturing industry of the future, a panel discussion focused on digitalisation with Helen Blomqvist, President of Sandvik Coromant and Tomas Frimmel, CEO at Microsoft Sweden, was equally fruitful.

“If we look at the skills gap in industry, it is so clearly correlated with the digitalisation that needs to happen,” said Frimmel when asked for his main take aways from the panel. “91% of all industries are digitalising, but only 6% are actually done. We know there is a competency gap, and that within a year and a half there will be 70,000 fewer people in the tech industry.”

Blomqvist agreed that working together will be key to tackle the challenges of digitalisation. “Our vision at Sandvik Coromant is to shape the future of manufacturing together, and we cannot shape that future without collaborating with other key players in the industry, like through our partnership with Microsoft.”

In addition to panel discussions, there were 23 seminars available each day held by the different partners, plus machine demonstrations in ten machines at the Sandvik Coromant Center, providing first hand presentations of the latest metal cutting and machining technology. This included the CoroMill Dura, a new range of high-end, versatile solid end mills that was launched in October 2022.

The CoroMill Dura uses WhisperKut technology. This sees each flute oriented at a different helix angle, and every angle of the cutting edge unequally spaced, ensuring good stability without vibration. The range is available from two to seven flutes with 1-4xD cutting length.
