Omron Electronic Components Europe will be demonstrating the next step in high efficiency, low footprint relay solutions at the Engineering Design Show 2024.

The show, which takes place in at Coventry Building Society Arena on 9–10 October 2024, is the UK’s biggest trade show dedicated to mechanical, electrical, and embedded design.

Stand K6 will see Omron showcasing a range of new relay products, including the G9KC high power PCB relay, designed for use in AC wallboxes for Mode 3AC EV charging stations. The G9KC provides the lowest contact resistance available on the market and produces significantly less load terminal heat rise when in operation compared to equivalent devices.

As electric vehicles (EVs) increase in popularity, the need for dependable, efficient, and high-speed EV supply equipment (EVSE) is becoming more apparent. However, the use of higher charging currents to improve charging speeds necessitates the use of higher rated electronic components, which generate more heat inside the wallbox enclosure. Excess heat can significantly affect charging speed and efficiency, and causes components to wear prematurely. With manufacturers keen to reduce the size of wallboxes, this issue is exacerbated further.

The G9KC utilises a mechanically coupled, double break contact design, optimised specifically for AC wallbox and Pedestal Charger designs. This results in improved efficiency, and significantly reduced heat dissipation with lower operating temperatures. As well as facilitating faster EV charging, this also unlocks new possibilities for more compact and reliable wallbox designs.

Also on stand K6 will be the G5Q-HR, the latest addition to Omron’s popular G5Q family of 10A PCB power relays. The G5Q-HR is the first G5Q device to meet the TV-8 standard at 10A class and is designed for applications which require high inrush current such as lighting controllers, smart plugs, home appliances, and power supplies. The relay is available in both single stable and latching variants, and offers reduced power consumption and heat dissipation, with a footprint 45% smaller than equivalent 16A designs

Omron will also introduce the latest in the G7EB series, the G7EB-E2 PCB High Power Relay, for applications with up to 150A at 800VAC / 60VDC.  With a higher capacity, the new G7EB-E2 model offers enhanced rated carry current and maximum switching current, with the same size and weight as existing high-capacity models. The new G7EB-E2 is suitable for applications with up to 100kW at 400VAC and 200kW at 800VAC, three-phase power supplies such as PV inverters, EV chargers, and UPS.
