Navitas unveils new digital control technique for AI data centres

At this month’s IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Expo (ECCE), Navitas Semiconductor is set to debut its innovative ‘IntelliWeave’ control technique.

This new patented digital control method is aimed at enhancing power supply unit (PSU) efficiency in next-generation AI data centres, addressing the growing energy demands driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and Cloud-based applications.

With the increasing importance of reducing power consumption in data centres, especially as AI continues to evolve, efficiency is a top priority for data centre architects and operators. To meet this challenge, Navitas has combined advanced power semiconductor technologies – such as gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC) – with its new IntelliWeave control technique. The result is improved power conversion efficiency, which plays a crucial role in reducing energy consumption and operational costs.

IntelliWeave introduces several key advancements in digital control. One of its core features is the ability to enable precision current sharing, which is critical in high-performance systems. Additionally, the control technique provides an ultra-fast dynamic response, ensuring efficient power distribution even during rapid load changes. Another essential aspect is its minimisation of phase error, leading to more reliable and stable power delivery.

The patented dual-loop and dual-feed-forward interleaving control that IntelliWeave employs achieves zero voltage switching (ZVS) across the full load range. This helps minimise energy losses and maximise efficiency. The digital control for Critical Conduction Mode (CRM) interleaving Totem Pole Power Factor Control (PFC) enables a 30% reduction in power losses compared to traditional Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM) solutions. Furthermore, the combination of GaN-based power ICs and IntelliWeave’s control strategy has been demonstrated in a 500 kHz GaN-based interleaving 3.2kW CrM PFC PSU, achieving an impressive 99.3% peak efficiency, including EMI filter losses.

The IEEE ECCE 2024 event will be held in Phoenix, Arizona, from 20–24 October 2024. Tao Wei, Director at Navitas, will present: ‘Novel digital control for a GaN-based CrM interleaved TP PFC’ on Monday, 21st October, at 5.30pm in the main Expo Hall. This session will provide more insights into the technical innovations behind IntelliWeave.
