Kip Reiner, Senior Field Design Engineer for the VFR brand, and Richard Zuratt, Senior R&D Engineer, will present a demonstration of the respective capabilities of different precision resistor types at the CARTS International 2014 conference. The conference is being held from March 31 to April 3 at The Biltmore in Santa Clara, Calif.

As part of their presentation, "The Difference in Stability Between Major Resistor Technologies," Reiner and Zuratt will provide a unique 3D visualization of thick film, thin film, and Bulk Metal® Foil technologies that will allow the audience to understand their differences in a concrete way. Following this, the audience will watch magnified real-time views of each resistor type as Reiner and Zuratt subject them to discharge pulses from a heavy-duty capacitor — with stunning results.

"It is no exaggeration to say this demonstration drew gasps from the audience when it was presented earlier this year at the JEDEC JC-13 meeting in Las Vegas," said Yuval Hernik, senior director of application engineering for VFR. "We think even the most jaded engineers who think they've seen everything will be impressed by this exceptional demo."

"The Difference in Stability Between Major Resistor Technologies" is part of a technical seminar taking place March 31 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. It will include a discussion of how different manufacturers can and do attach different meanings to terms such as "tolerance," "TCR," and "TCR Tracking" in datasheets. Reiner and Zuratt will explore what these terms really mean and the pitfalls of vague, exaggerated, and incomplete specs — with the goal of helping designers reach the fundamentals in a precision resistor datasheet within a few minutes.
