Q5D will give the first public demonstration of its CY1000, 5-axis additive manufacturing robotic cell on stand Q162 at the Advanced Engineering Show at the NEC from 1―2 November 2023.

The CY1000 automates the addition of electrical wiring and connectors to increasingly complex products. Through the additive manufacturing process, called ‘Electrical Function Integration’, the robot mitigates the need for traditional wire harnesses, which are large, heavy, costly, and often unreliable. It integrates bare or insulated wires up to 3mm in diameter and their terminations directly into products, fixing them firmly in place to create robust, reliable assemblies.

Electrical Function Integration also boosts productivity and cuts costs by reducing or eliminating the manual processes that make up more than 80% of the work of assembling traditional wire harnesses.

The technology has applications in most electronic/electrical engineering sectors and is particularly attractive in transportation. Here, the weight savings it delivers cut fuel consumption and emissions to deliver economic and environmental benefits.

The process simplifies supply chains, enabling the manual wire harness work usually carried out in low-cost labour regions to be brought back onshore to the final assembly locations.
