Cope Technology reshoring success fuels growth under employee ownership
Cope Technology, a leading PCB assembly manufacturer, has successfully reshored a key product line to its facility on the Pensnett Trading Estate, UK, after demonstrating unmatched quality and rapid response times. This win comes as the 40-year-old company, known for its low-to-medium volume electrical assemblies in sectors like CCTV, traffic management, and emergency vehicles, embraces employee ownership through an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT), following the founders' sale of the company.
The transition to employee ownership, supported by the Business Growth West Midlands in Dudley Programme (BGWM), has allowed Cope’s team to shape the company’s future while maintaining its commitment to quality. BGWM has provided strategic planning, management support, and employee engagement guidance to the new leadership team, which Production Director Adam Holmes describes as instrumental to Cope’s recent success. “Our Business Growth Adviser has been with us on the entire journey, providing planning, forecasting, and strengthening employee engagement strategies. This support has made the transition significantly smoother,” Holmes explained.
Through BGWM’s GROWTHmapper tool, Cope assessed its operational strengths and weaknesses, fostering productive discussions and guiding strategic improvements. This process helped secure the reshored contract, while access to additional resources, workshops, and grants further strengthened Cope’s growth trajectory. A recent digital manufacturing workshop and factory tour hosted by client Thomas Dudley provided practical insights that aligned Cope’s digitalization efforts with its clients’ end-product needs, fostering greater understanding and collaboration.
Donna Watkins, Business Growth Adviser for BGWM, commended Cope's leadership, stating, “It has been a pleasure to work with Cope’s team, who have embraced our recommendations and are moving the business to the next level.” The initiative, funded by Dudley Council via the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, supports over 600 businesses across the borough with local advisers, focusing on sectors and entrepreneurs in underrepresented groups.
Reflecting on Cope’s journey, Holmes expressed gratitude for BGWM’s role in driving the company forward. “The support has been invaluable during this period of transformation. It has laid down the foundation for Cope Technology’s future growth.”
