More name change misery and mixed up dates
Steve Rogerson looks at some of the news that may have missed the front page. There are lots of reasons for companies to change their names, most of them irrelevant and erroneous, as I have pointed out many times before. It is much better in almost every case to keep the original name - a name that your customers know and has respect in the industry. OK, if the name has become tarnished for some reason, then maybe fair enough.
Energy harvesting for 'net-zero-power' IoT devices
NB‑IoT and other low power wide area technologies have made ten year battery lives a reality in applications with minimal data transmission. Others need some extra power, which is precisely where energy harvesting fits in. Imagine an IoT device that performs year in, year out, powered by a steady drip of power scavenged from its immediate surroundings.
Commercial embedded Linux benefits: managing compliance
This is part three of a series on the main benefits of utilising a commercially-supported embedded Linux solution. Part one explained how you can get to market faster and part two outlined the long-term savings associated with commercial embedded Linux. Commercial embedded Linux is the solution of choice for many software developers working on embedded products. Guest blog written by Pavan Singh, Wind River.
Commercial embedded Linux benefits: long term savings
Commercially-supported embedded Linux is the best choice for embedded systems. It provides organisations with the support they need to create customised solutions at a fraction of the cost of developing them on your own. This is the second part, in a series about the main benefits of utilising a commercially-supported embedded Linux solution. Part 1 explains how commercial embedded Linux helps you get to market faster and part...
Urgent/11 further boosts VxWorks security
At Wind River, security is embedded in its DNA. It is part of the rich heritage of nearly 40 years in mission-critical systems. It is built into all the technologies it provides to help customers develop trusted and reliable solutions. Wind River take security extremely seriously, which is why the recent vulnerabilities discovered within the TCP/IP (IPnet) networking stack, dubbed “Urgent/11,” has resulted in the most secure VxWo...
What does 3GPP Release 14 means for NB-IoT and LTE-M?
It’s been about two years since 3GPP, the Standards Developing Organization that defines mobile communication standards, froze its 14th release. The release includes a number of improvements to NB‑IoT and LTE‑M, two cellular technologies that enable the cellular Internet of Things. Now that many of the features are supported by mobile network operators, cellular module manufacturers are announcing the first generation of Release 14...
Commercial embedded Linux benefits: get to market faster
This is part one of a series on the benefits of utilising a commercially-supported embedded Linux solution. Part two outlines the long-term savings associated with commercial embedded Linux and part three reviews how you can simplify compliance management. Linux is the most popular choice for embedded solutions and is often considered the default environment for software developers. Guest blog written by Pavan Singh, Wind River.
Overcoming the dangers of Virtual Private Networks
Most consumers regard Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) as a credible means of securing their data transmissions and overall privacy. Few realise VPNs were initially designed to provide these benefits for on-premise settings, offering only limited efficacy on the assortment of mobile, hybrid cloud, and multi-cloud technologies commonly used today. By Don Boxley, CEO and Co-Founder of DH2i.
Easier installation, operations and maintenance at the Edge
The network edge may look like the land of opportunity for telcos seeking fertile ground to grow new revenue-generating services. For their network operations managers, however, ensuring the delivery of reliable services across disparate edge architectures and geographically dispersed sites of varying sizes could well look like a nightmare scenario. Indeed, operational complexity is one of the biggest challenges of edge cloud deployments. Guest ...
Semi is best: why semi-rigid ducting is best for MVHR systems
When you consider how much time we all spend enclosed by four walls, calculated to be as much as 90%, the need for a high level of comfort within those surroundings is crucial to our well-being. This is where Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) comes into its own as a solution of choice. Here Rupert Kazlauciunas, Technical Product Manager, MVHR, Zehnder UK, tells us more.
