onsemi’s PowerTrench T10 MOSFETs have been shortlisted for the Electronics Excellence Awards under the Power Product category.

Exhibitors at electronica have been approached to submit their most innovative and show-stopping products.

The PowerTrench T10 MOSFET Family from onsemi is engineered to handle high currents that are crucial for DC/DC power conversion stages. The two devices in the family, NTMFWS1D5N08X (80V, 1.43 mΩ, 5 x 6mm SO8-FL package) and NTTFSSCH1D3N04XL (40V, 1.3 mΩ, 3.3 x 3.3mm source down dual cool package), are best in class of figure of merit (FOM) for power supply unit (PSU) and intermediate bus converter (IBC) in AI data centre applications.

PowerTrench T10 MOSFETs offer increased power density and superior thermal performance in a compact footprint. This is achieved through a shield gate trench design, which boasts an ultra-low gate charge and delivers the best-in-class RDS(ON). of less than 0.5 milliohm. Additionally, the soft recovery body diode and lower Qrr effectively minimises ringing, overshoots, and electrical noise to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and robustness under stress.

PowerTrench T10 MOSFETs can significantly reduce power losses that occur during the energy conversion process and will have a meaningful impact on the demands for the next generation of data centres. These new MOSFETs can improve switching losses by up to 50% and conduction losses by more than 30% compared to earlier generation devices. The T10 PowerTrench Family offers a wide range of packages including SO8-FL, source-down dual cool and u8FL. They also meet the stringent Open Rack V3 efficiency specification, which stipulates efficiency of 97.5% or better.

Artificial intelligence and electrification are transforming our global landscape, leading to an unprecedented surge in energy requirements. The demand for AI, Cloud computing, and connectivity continues to grow, driving data centre expansion and unprecedented demand for more energy. According to the International Energy Agency’s Electricity 2024 report, data centre power consumption is expected to reach an estimated 1,000TWh globally within the next two years. This has global implications as regards the development of critical energy infrastructure, security of supply and environmental impacts. Accelerating innovation in power semiconductors to improve energy efficiency is a key to enabling these technological megatrends and powering the future responsibly.

Innovations like the PowerTrench T10 are instrumental in this endeavour, offering substantial reductions in power losses during energy conversion. This not only optimises energy use but also addresses the growing power needs of emerging data centres, marking a significant stride in meeting the challenges of today’s and tomorrow's energy demands.
