Ubiquisys collaborates with Intel to develop intelligent small cells
Ubiquisys has announced a strategic agreement with Intel to develop intelligent basestation (BTS) computing platforms based on Intel® architecture. This emerging generation of intelligent small cells (small base stations) will offer new levels of processing power, creating a cloud of IP-enabled “compute engines” much closer to mobile users.
UbiqDemand for mobile data is rising inexorably, and small cells installed in enterprises, public spaces and metro locations will provide the capacity boost required. This major proliferation of small cells creates new opportunities and challenges for Service Providers. Intelligent small cells with powerful computing platforms, abundant storage and peer coordination effectively create a distributed pool of compute resources. This is an opportunity for Service Providers to transform the mobile data experience since media and user applications can be served much closer to the point of use. It also creates new opportunities for serving data-intensive local content locally, for example interactive mapping services or video advertising. Location-triggered applications can be similarly augmented, especially for video services.
With scalability from the Intel® AtomTM processor to the Intel ® Xeon®Processor, and flexible software programming model and tool chains, the Intel platform is ideally suited to provide the significant amount of processing power required, with substantial headroom for value added services.
