It has been announced that USM has recently received Cradle to Cradle certification for both USM Haller and USM Kitos M. What does this mean? Cradle to Cradle Design defines and develops recyclable products.

It differentiates itself from conventional recycling by maintaining the quality of the raw materials over multiple product life cycles and by only using ‘chemicals designated as safe’.

The production processes as well as the use and the recycling of the products are all designed to maintain the quality of the raw materials over several life cycles. That means that there is no waste; everything is 100% reusable. The right materials are used in defined cycles at the right time and at the right place. It is inspired by nature, where apparent waste products form the basis for new organisms. One example is flowering trees, whose flowers either become new trees or fall to the ground and become nutrients.

Cradle to Cradle products achieve a new dimension in quality and are characterised by high efficiency and low or, ideally, no environmental impact. They provide increased consumer convenience and reflect a paradigm shift in consumer behaviour and industrial production. Cradle to Cradle Design defines much more than the form, functionality and contents of a product; the goal is to create a new dimension in quality and safety in endless cycles.

USM has always been closely involved in the topic of sustainability and what that entails, and makes corresponding contributions as an employer as well as a furniture manufacturer. USM unequivocally commits to minimising its consumption and output of energy, emissions, raw materials and to efficient production methods. It was the next logical step for the company to aspire for Cradle to Cradle certification.
