Texas Instruments has introduced a flexible high-speed equalizer to extend the reach of printed circuit board signal channels, such as backplanes or active copper cables. With multi-rate operation up to 11.3 Gbps, the new equalizer supports all 10G/8G interface standards. The device’s two-wire serial interface, pin control and PC-based graphical user interface (GUI) enable very quick prototyping, which significantly reduces the development cycle for high-performance computers, storage subsystems, telecommunications equipment and automatic test equipment (ATE).

The TLK1101E features excellent loss of compensation to deliver high signal integrity in target applications. For example, the equalizer provides 30-dB of loss compensation to support up to 20 meters of 24-AWG cable or up to 40 inches of FR-4 printed circuit board trace at data transmission rates up to 11.3 Gbps, with only 0.13 unit intervals of deterministic jitter at the equalizer output. The device also provides up to 7 dB transmitter de-emphasis to further compensate for loss of up to 12 inches of FR-4 board interconnect.

The TLK1101E is highly programmable and allows one single device to be configured for its optimum performance under various data rates and various channel lengths. The output differential voltage swing can be set to 300 mVp-p, 600 mVp-p, or 900 mVp-p. The interconnect length can be set from 0 to 20 meters of 24-AWG twinaxial cable. The input threshold voltage and the loss of signal assert level can also be adjusted. Those settings can be made either through control pins or the two-wire serial control interface. The low-frequency cut-off is low enough to support low-frequency control signals such as SAS and SATA out-of-band signals.

TI provides a wide selection of high speed equalizers for cables and printed circuit boards. The low-jitter devices compensate for channel loss at various data rates in high-speed links for communications and data systems.
