Sustainable certification for IT products
Leading IT brands are moving to certify mobile computers and tablets for sustainability factors. Models of notebook computers and tablets have met the new, advanced sustainability criteria in TCO Certified, the third party sustainability certification for IT products.
“Work and everyday life are mobile. So the devices we use are becoming smaller, more portable and upgraded more often,” commented Sören Enholm, CEO of TCO Development, the organisation behind TCO Certified. “To reduce the environmental and human impact of technology, we need to make conscious, comprehensive sustainability decisions when buying new products. When leading IT brands use TCO Certified to help them make more sustainable products, that’s a step in the right direction.”
A TCO Certified computer or tablet contains less hazardous substances such as chlorinated and brominated flame retardants, heavy metals and the phthalates DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP. Certified product models also meet stricter verification criteria for the brand’s progress in socially responsible manufacturing.
“Focus on sustainability is now a clear trend within the IT industry”, continued Enholm. “Brands need to pay attention to the environmental and social aspects of their business or risk not being able to meet growing customer demand for sustainably designed and made products. For a manufacturer, using a relevant product certification can be part of a smart sustainability strategy.”
