Semiconductor sales in Europe amounted to $2.622bn in May 2016, the European Semiconductor Industry Association (ESIA) reported on 5th July. The report, based on the latest WSTS figures, shows a 0.8% decrease compared to April, substantially in line with global monthly developments. On a worldwide basis, semiconductor sales were $25.952bn in May 2016, up 0.4% versus April.

All growth figures represent a three-month rolling average.

In Europe, the main drivers of May’s sales were discrete semiconductors (up 2.5% compared to April), sensors and actuators (up 0.5%) and logic semiconductor devices (up 1.7%).

Sales of semiconductors designed to be used in specific applications also increased in May over April, both in Europe and worldwide. Looking at specific product categories worldwide, automotive and consumer application specific chips performed particularly well.

In May, exchange rate effects were still visible when comparing market growth in Euros and in Dollars. Measured in Euro, semiconductor sales were €2.330b in May 2016, down 1.4% versus April 2016, and a decrease of 11.4% versus the same month one year ago.
