Schneider Electric and EME Installations deliver student accommodation
The UK is globally recognised as an education hub, attracting some of the best students from around the world. This year saw a record number of both domestic and overseas students gaining admission to higher education. As a result, the student accommodation market has experienced significant growth over the past few years with Purpose Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) buildings becoming vital to meet the ever-increasing demand.
Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management has recently completed the successful installation of a new student accommodation building in Birmingham, known as the Globe Works.
Birmingham has high student accommodation demand needs, with over 80,000 students studying at 8 universities in the City. Located in the heart of Birmingham, a short walk to both Aston University and Birmingham City University, the Globe Works will cater for over 500 students. The new accommodation offers a mixture of studio and cluster flats along with many amenities to meet the needs of students including a café, gym and retail facilities.
Schneider Electric worked alongside it’s longstanding partner EME Installations (EMEI), to provide a complete electrical solution for The Globe project and was chosen to supply due to the high quality and reliability of its products and ability to offer a wide offer portfolio. The Schneider offer solutions included NSX moulded case circuit breakers, sub-distribution meters, Canalis busbar and Ultimate and Lisse wiring devices. Schneider Electric went beyond the original electrical specification for sub distribution and RV distribution systems, to provide cable management and wiring device solutions.
Student accommodation regulations require specialised equipment for its rooms, including disabled access. Schneider’s Ultimate Slimline range of DDA compliant products were chosen to meet these requirements, as they visibly stand out from their surroundings and ensure safe usage for disabled users.
The supply and installation of Schneider products was completed in a timely manner to ensure the project was delivered in conjunction with strict deadlines. Steve Dempsey, Operations Director at EMEI, commented: ‘When going into a project of this complexity, it helps to have an experienced technology partner to ensure all parties are making the best decisions possible. What attracted us to Schneider Electric was its expertise and the completeness of its offering – it delivered a solution for the entire project not just a single system.’
Steven Rouse, National Business Development Manager at Schneider Electric, said: "This was a smooth project, with no supply delays or site access issues. While there were many considerations to take stock of, not least the requirement for DDA-compliant products, we are delighted that we could supply a solution for every need and were able to do so responsively. We are thankful to EMEI for the opportunity and to all our installer partners who helped us make it a success."
